Stephens, G. C., Sarkar, M., & Lazarus, M. D. (2022). ‘A whole lot of uncertainty’: A qualitative study exploring clinical medical students’ experiences of uncertainty stimuli. Medical Education, 56(7), 736–746.

The article opens up with a review of the current research on Uncertainty Tolerance and a review of the existing research on the subject related to students in medical educational contexts.

This qualitative study looks at the different types of uncertainty described by medical students in interviews and categorizes them into various forms of uncertainty related to their roles as early career medical professionals.

There is, as the title suggests, a whole lot of uncertainty. I was particularly interested by the discussion of professional uncertainty where the authors describe a need for ‘grey cases’ which introduce students to cases that they can work on together that don’t have solutions.
