Law

Gemma Smyth came to questions of uncertainty through working with law students in clinical and experiential learning environments. She has spent most of her academic career working with social justice-related legal clinics. In these contexts, students are exposed to “real life” law practice often for the first time. Students face many challenges trying to bridge classroom and clinical learning, one being the uncertainty that arises when faced with messy problems expressed in ways that are antithetical to how they are presented in most classroom contexts. This is not unique to law; transitions to practice are challenging for students in all professional disciplines. In this project, Gemma is interested in better understanding how students and new-career professionals manage uncertainty. She aims to develop frameworks and tools to support students and new lawyers through uncertainty through an interdisciplinary lens.
